DIY tank/tv console

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry, I might not have been clear enough with my initial post. What I was talking about was decorating the inside of the TV with non-functional electronic and eletrical gizmos and then sealing over the lot so it looks like you've just filled the TV up with water. I wasn't advocating sealing over any functioning wiring. That would make things a bit painful if you ever need to swap out any components later on.

wow cant wait to see this when its done sounds awesome

How do you get in to do maintenance on the tank. if it fills up the viewing area how much room is left?

well you would cut the top in half so you can feed and do the maintenance. Which has proven to be tougher then i thought. I was hoping that it was screwed in. but its glued all the way around. but there is about 3 " from the top of the viewing window to the bottom of the lid.

Maybe you could just chop the whole top off, sand and stain the new edges to match. Then put hinges on one side and reattach so you can open it up. That way you don't mess up the look of the TV but it's still functional.

Are you going to put some epoxy or something on the inside of the TV or have a full lid for the tank? I would be conserned about water damamge ruining the TV wood. I say if your going to go to the trouble of building it do an extra step to make sure it lasts.

yes I am going to line the inside with extra plywood, since the sides are plastic. So i will be building a shell and covering it in epoxy. Also I am planning on building and internal overflow filter inside. So i can completely close it off or build it 6 in back and put the filter in there.

Cool! I can't wait to see it finished. Keep posting pics as you go!

the only update I have so far is that I finally got the lid all the way off. Which made another problem. Some of the support pieces that I thought were going to stay in place came up with the lid. So i am going to try and figure the best way to insecure everything. I am going to cut the glass this week... I hope it does not crack worse smaller then I need it to be.
