...is the pvc over the clear tubing to make like a handle?

Nope, the hose is actually stuffed inside the end of the cpvc tube. It is not regular pvc. It is CPVC, a close cousin of pvc. It is measured in outside diameter where pvc is measured in inside diameter. It is convenient in that it gives additional dimensions for matching odd size hoses.

"To drain, I start the syphon with a water bed pump. To fill, I use a barrel with a sump pump so that I can pretreat the water."

Does the water bed pump go in line with the garden hose and syphon attachment or do you just stick it on the end of the hose?

whats the 3rd gadget for? Why would you want to run water to your fridge?

 Ok, so I never dreamed that it could be read wrong. I need to be more careful in my wording. Copper tubing comes in different hardnesses. Copper pipe is hard and not pliable. Copper tubing that is used in air conditioning work and refrigerators is very soft and can be bent by hand. If you go to the hardware store and tell the guy you are want to run a water line to your refrigerator, he will put the right stuff in your hand. :D

And why you would want to run water to your fridge is so that it will make ice and cold water.

Here is a picture of it hooked up. It requires a second hose that is hooked up to the tap. When it is turned on, it creates a suction through venturi action and draws water from the fish tank. You only need to run the tap water for a few seconds to get the water starting over the side of the fish tank. As soon as that happens, it will create its own syphon and continue to drain the tank without running the tap.

Here is another idea. It is not DIY but just something for Show-n-Tell. I thought it was worth sharing.

This is a silverware basket from a dishwasher. I picked it up at Goodwill for a buck. It comes in really handy at feeding time.
