DIY Trickle Filter (Pic heavy!)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice work.

1Q) Is that black pipe inside a heater?

2Q) What's the front bottom valve/tube for? Drain? (why front?)

3Q) How long has it been running?

4Q) Any other filters on the tank?

5Q) How are the water params?

That's enough for now...:D

1Q) Is that black pipe inside a heater?

Yes its a stealth heater ziptied to pvc frame work about 4-5" off the bottom

2Q) What's the front bottom valve/tube for? Drain? (why front?)

Came on the front as this was a rain barrel, it has a stand I'm not using so you could get a bucket under the barrel and fill it with water. I use it with a piece of old python tubing to see the water level in the sump and if I ever need to drain it out I can.

3Q) How long has it been running?

About 3 weeks now.

4Q) Any other filters on the tank?

Nope I took my biowheel and biomedia out of my 2 Emperor 400's and stuffed them into the sump.

5Q) How are the water params?

Haven't check since last water change was running about 20ppm nitrates then no nitrites or ammonia present.

Hope that helps.

That's great:headbang2.

And a very cool use of the front drain  (I didn't recognise the container as a rain barrel :WHOA:).

Thanks for sharing.

Think you could break this down into a peice by peice and price listing for us when you get bored? I'm curious as to the cost effectiveness as well as where you got most of the equipment from.

Very nice, how ofter do you check the water level, I have to check mine about once a week to make sure the pumps not running dry.

Wow, I was thinking of doing the exact same thing for my 270 when it gets here! I was going to use one of those 15g plastic trash cans. Is the water supplied to your filter from the overflow on your tank? How big a return pump are you using (gph)? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I haven't made a wet/dry filter before.
