DIY Trickle Filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice :) Now the new pics :D

nice set up......

The pump is housed in the tank. No pre-filter. I no that's not optimal as the pump turns into a poo shredder.

Mag Drive 12, so minus head height, guessing 1000 gallons an hour, 125 gallon tank, i would say water is turned 9 times an hour.

Will take new pictures soon. Tank is pretty bare as as I'm keeping it open for the rays. Once the plywood tank is built, this tank will house geos.

I have used this filter for several years and have had great results. Thought I would share if you were interested. Works great for wall tanks as you can hide everything behind the wall.

Picture 1. Backside of tank. Rubbermaid container is the trickle filter. Magdrive pump is located in the bottom left side of the tank and pumps water through the black tubing above the tank to the filter on the right. Water goes through a spray bar which then sprays the water onto the mechanical filter (held in place by egg crate). Water then falls through the pot scrubbies which act as the bio filter. Water then gravity feeds through two drains back into the tank.

All comments and questions welcome.

I will be working on another DIY system to put in a stand under the tank soon. I will have pictures up when it's completed sometime this winter.

so simple and so efective, AWESOME JOB!!!

awesome! i think you just gave me the idea for my next filtration lol. i have a few questions though. how are you getting the water to the filter. I'd love to see some pics of that. second, is it an over flow or something of the sorts?

he explains it quite clearly, the pump sits in the tank and water is pumped into the rubbermaid bin through the black hose, gravity does the rest, so simple, and so effective

Ask away on questions. I started this thread to help out others.

I have two motoro rays right now and never saw Ammonia, Nitrates, Nitrites go above 0 ppm. I do weekly 50% water changes on Saturdays. I ended up getting food poisoning one weekend and skipped a water change. 2 weeks and water parameters didn't change.
