I have recently taken a liking to Tropheus moorii "Kasanga" and Tropheus moorii "Ilangi". I was thinking a 100-150 gallon tank. If I was to get it, I would have to sell all of my tanks (except my 20 long reef) and DIY the tank still. I was thinking plywood with thick plexi front viewing. Now for the questions:
How expensive would it be to build a 100-150 gallon DIY tank?
What are the best dimensions for Tropheus?
Will Neolamprologus stappersii cohabitate with Tropheus?
Will open top with a hanging light work or would it be best with closed top?
How much light should I get? Like MH, T5, or just Multiple tube Flourescent?
Thats all I have for now.
DIY tanks do not become cost effective until you reach 500+ gallons or so. You would probably spend twice the price building as you would buying a 125, if not more.
tropheus need plenty of rocks and caves and the length of the tank is important. It gives them plenty of room to separate themselves and spread aggression.
I would go with a closed top. Wouldn't want any of your prized tropheus jumping out of the tank.
A simple standard light should do the trick.
Overall, see what kind of deals you can find on a 100-125G tank with lids, lights, and stand. Buying one will save you a lot of money. Building your own filters is where you can save big $$.
