My tank has 3 drilled holes in the bottom aside from the overflow. So all i need is a grate to cover the holes and hold up the gravel, and the water will just drain straight down into my sump.

I need to build a grate of some sort for my tank to form the under gravel filter. I have been looking for egg crate but cant find it. Does anyone have any suggestions on other materials to use to make it? I think I've seen it made of PVC pipes before with holes drilled in it, but I'm not sure if that was the way it was used.

Any and all advice greatly appreciated!

This design could eng up very badly. Witgh a power failure you will likely end up with a tank full of dried fish and a flood on the floor.

Egg crate can be found a Lowes or Home Depot type stores. It is usually stock in one of two places, or sometimes both. Check the lighting dept. where the 2'x4' fluoresent fixtures are sold. It has also been found in the dept where the stock accoustical ceiling tiles.

its not like i have a choice, the tank already has the holes. and if there is a power failure i can just shut off the flow with ball valves, not a big deal.

and when your not home :nilly::nilly::nilly::nilly::nilly::nilly::nilly:

If it were me personally i would seal the holes, or buy one of those things you can buy to have the power keep running for 6 hours after a black out(forgot what they are called :|)

i have a 100 gallon sump/wetdry so i have some time. i really want to utilize the existing holes. the more filtration the better.

has anyone seen pvc pipe used and a UGF, like holes are drilled too small for gravel and then the pipe is connected to a powerhead, or in my case a hole in the bottom....

Honestly way out your options here, i know you want more filtration but at what cost. You could never have a problem but there is a really good chance that there will be. Plug the holes and figure out another form of filtration. IMO it is NOT worth the risk.
