DIY UnderGravelFilter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You could run a reverse flow under gravel system, in this case the bottom would be the discharge instead of the intake. We designed a PVC manifold and ran this type of system in my 135 cichlid tank. I personally think it's a good idea because it helps to keep stuff from completely settling to the bottom of the rock.

Yes, BAD IDEA.

In a power failure the tank will drain. And if you're not home the tank will drain completely.

If the holes are already there, stick PVC through them (make sure the top of the PVC is near the top of the tank) and there, BAM, straight to your sump, without the danger of emptying.

i think i'm just gonna run the underground filter, and let the water drain from the holes freely and connect the pipes to my ocean clear, this way there is no chance of overflow.

Are you still thinking of running the open holes to your ocean clear filter?

thats what ive decided to do

Yes, forget the sump, and use a closed system as was recommeded earlier. And if you have the Ocean Clear canisters with a pump pulling the water thru them, you are all set. However, you still need to use coarse substrate to avoid plugging the undergravel filter.
