DIY W/D and Pump for a 180 Gal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I will look into that, my LFS is kinda shady, the owner is feeding me BS all the time but I guess it wouldn't kill me to ask. Thanks

It is just hard for me to imagine 18 gallons of water a minute passing through a 30 (or 40 gallon) tank without fail. In addition, I have read that pumps are not made to run 24/7/365, doesn't this pose a problem?

I have a mag 9.5 with 4' of head, so maybe that's 700gph? That runs in less than 10gallons of water. The water appears to be sitting. There isn't really visible flow to the water in the sump.

I have pads. Still too much noise. They are 3600gph though.. The 24 isn't horrible. The 9 still has good hum to it. I can barely hear my 5 though!

30 gallons is enough for a 180 tank. I have a 180 with a 20 gallon sump and it works just fine. I had mine set up at first with 2x 1" overflows to the sump and it made a horrible noise all the time (like a toilet flushing almost). I switched the 1" PVC to a 1 1/2" PVC tubing and it made a huge difference. For a pump I use Pentair Aquatics " Quiet Ones". You can order them at Jehmco.com

Thanks for all the info guys! You have been a great help!

Now all that is left is finding a 180 gallon Aquarium in Kansas! A company sells them out of KC MO for 450.00. It is about the best deal i can find w/o shipping. Do you guys have any ideas? I know this should be a seperate thread but I don't trust me construction skills to build my own, Although I am considering building the stand. Who knows! Thanks again
