i have been reading about creating my own wet/dry filter. I still dont know exactly how it works but i get the idea of it. I have a 75 gallon tank, what size sump should i have? How much do you think making my own will cost me? / save me ? Basically i need this to be dumbed down a bit, but i dont want to drill holes in my aquarium. Any pictures would be greatly appreciated.

:iagree:

The most complex part of any "advanced" filter system is the overflow. Many people can not resist "reinventing the wheel" before they fully understand the mechanics of the overflow. A DIY overflow will be the cheapest option but buying one will be the fastest way to get the setup working. They can be purchased for $30-50 but the DIY costs from five to ten dollars.

The cost of the DIY makes it tempting but under no conditions should you change a dimension, fitting, or position for the sake of convenience or installation. Make the first one EXACTLY as you see it in the sticky thread. If it does not look exactly like that one when you are done, test it out on a bucket of water out in the yard or in the bath tub first. If there are problems, post a pick of what you have and many of us will be happy to figure things out for you.

As for the sump or wet/dry, pick a design that you like and go from there. There really isn't a right or wrong answer as to which is best.

ok so i still don't really know how to construct the whole thing. I am pretty sure i understand the overflow, lengths of pipes need to be equal (?), while the "T" leading to the sump needs to be higher then the inlet and outlet pipes. Next question is, what pump is strong enough for my 75 gallon tank? I have read many people with the "mag drive 3" and "mag drive 5" series, will this do? Last thing, how do i do the rest of the filter? Also this is for my freshwater tank. I read through the threads on 3reef.com and the thread here, DIY overflow and am still slighty confused on the construction of the rest of the filter.

any help is greatly appreciated.
thanks

yea i read your link and the one inside that one, i know the pump is placed inside the sump but how do you hook it up so that it flows the water back into the main tank? I also decided to build the sump like yours in the link you posted because of its simplicity.:D

nevermind, I think I understand just about the whole idea now. So the pump can just sit in the sump, with a pipe used to shoot water back into the tank? Ok I think I'll start the buying all the equipment and hopefully begin construction this weekend. Last question, can you have a heater in the sump, but have no heater in the main tank, and it won't melt the Tubberware container?
