i have seen wavemaker which is quite costly, anyone here did a diy wavemaker on a normal cheap powerhead? i have search on diy wavemaker site which many people have a couple of powerhead on timers which seen high heat producing, is a idea anyone can share how to diy one wavemaker?

Yes, Pm me and I will give you the website. (dont know if they want me posting it here)

My local shop had a powerhead flowing back into the tank through a spray bar that was out of the water and spraying up at about 30 degrees, it generated a nice wave action in the tank all by itself.

Cheers

how does it work? any detail pictures?

it has a rotating "thing" in it which turns and switches the flow between the two outlets - used heaps in marine tanks (seach on ReefCentral.com). don't try to pump too much water through it though - they lock up.

Saw one a few yrs ago, the guy had 2 acrylic tanks (20g) mounted above his large salt tank, with the flapper valve from a water closet mounted in each one. A pump would alternately fill these tanks, they then 'flush' down to the large tank creating current and waves for his coral.

Hokey, but ingenious.

Must has had a interesting sound.
