I recently got a 120g tank (48x24x24) and it has a corner overflow. There are two holes in the bottom of the overflow. I have sealed one of the holes, and the other I am going to be using as my intake for a wet dry filter. What I am doing is filling the overflow with bioballs, filter floss, and other BB breeding grounds. So my question is, since this will be the "dry" portion of my wet dry, can I just put my pump into a trash can or something and let the water drain into it and pump it back into the tank? I will also be running 2 canister filters on the tank (xp3, eheim 2213). The pump that I plan on using is rated at around 1000 gallons per hour. The pipe that will be feeding to the pump is 1.5" pvc.

Anyone wanna weigh in?

Sunny's on Bump.

You want to put the trash can under the open hole?

lol no, I will be running 1.5" pvc into the trashcan or whatever I decide to use.

that corner alone isn't going to have enough volume for the media by itself. but you definitely can make a wet dry out of a garbage can.

not even if im rolling the tank over like 8x an hour with the pump alone?

I made my pond filter out of a trash can and it worked like a charm!

It would work, but I think you wouldn't get very solid mechanical filtration as the water would run down the inside of the overflow. I think you can keep is as simple as you have it, but move the media into the trash can and use the second hold for the pump return.

Sorry that its sideways.....

I was literally staring at the tank last night and then it hit me, "$***, the water is going to run down the sides." So yeah, I think thats the real problem I am looking at. Do I ebayed 5 gallons of bioballs and they should be here monday. What size trash can is that in the picture? Whoever built the stand only cut 2 11" holes and put doors on them so fitting anything into the stand is a pain! When I made the trashcan filter fo my pond I just ziptied x amount of 1" pvc to the "eggcrate" light cover thing that was cut to size, is this how you made your hold area?
