Dang...the cichla guys are giving me a hard time about my flock of parrots and now I'm being booted from here for pbass. No where else to go. Tough crowd. :D

I read online somewhere that temperature can also affect their color. Ill have to wait until summer to see if this is true or not though. As of now my unheated tank is probably around 75 but gets to about 80 in the summer.

I think that's true. Once I bumped my tank temp from 80 to 84 my old BP was an even brighter orange.

Is there any way to tell dyed (or otherwise modified) orange/red from undyed while in a store? I'd hate to support that kind of thing, but I want a bp.

If they are Orange, Yellow, Brown, Tan, or Black then they are not dyed. If they are this shade of purple red then they are dyed. Colors like Blue and Green are dyed as well.

The fish will only loose their color, if they are dyed, and it fades over time. Otherwise, if their color fades, it would be due to a poor diet, or water conditions.
