I'm thinking of adding a silver arowana to my peacock bass and oscar tank. From what I have read whilst researching the fish it seems that it is inevitable that a silver will end up with drop eye, is this true or have people raised them and never had a problem with drop eye.

My local fish shop has a few captive bred and a single wild silver. Is it better to get a wild one or does this make no difference.

Will I be better trying to find a black?

most silver would suffer de ...
the black will be nice addition to your tank though i dont know abt de thing on black aros :grinno:

The only way for them not to get Drop Eye. Is to have a shallow tank like a 40 breeder, but of course bigger. Because they are so used to looking up in the shallows but now that there is room under them they will look down.

... no silvers don't get drop eye if kept correctly. Captive bred is definately better to get, black there is no difference on care but just looks nicer and more expensive. If you take care of your silvers most of them don't get drop eye as long as you keep them nice and healthy. If you feed them too much fat stuff, like shrimp and stuff that contains lots of fat then yes he will, but if you feed them like worms, pellets if possible, insects, then you should be good to go. Also don't feed very much feeders. Arowanas don't look down just for the heck of it. It doesn't matter if you get a huge tank, they will still look down. But aros look up for food, down there is also food but they know there isn't as much. They will look down but mostly they will look up.

So in other words, You_got_no_idea? lol I'd need to see some sort of hardcore evidence to support any claims either way. I have seen many different cases from many different tanks....Some provide excellent care for their fish, and some don't. Diets have been variables as well, with all different sorts of diets still being affected by drop eye....

Confused... ^ i started reading on this sight cause i have a silver and i heard that it is about the diet and stuff. That is what i always read on mfk. So do you know what causes drop eye i would really like to know.

i think I heard black's never get drop eye and for silvers its genetic or something

??? i doubt that.

Yeah thats what I have heard. Just wondering if it is worth it to find a black instead. I know they are harder to find and more expensive (especially in the UK) but if it is true that they do not get DE then Im thinking it might be worth it

You haven't read much on mfk then. There are no cures for DE. Crap about lean diets or tank reflections or ping pong ball distractions are common misconceptions.
