do all you guys have carbon in your tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo

I used to use the standard large filters and other than pre-rinsing to get rid of fine particles I left them alone. After I started having Ich problems with my Loaches (only loaches.. weird) the Kordon Ich Attack said remove carbon, so i did in two of my tanks and after reading about the carbon I just have been using the mesh material only. I made a cut on the inflow side of the filter and removed the encapsulated carbon and don't see a reason to go back.

No, and the HLLE link imo isn't from the dust likely.. but more so it removes both good and bad things from the water ( ie minerals and vitamins) as it's also been linked to a poor diet... made a few lightbulbs go there.. lol. But no like others I use it only when needed to remove meds or when I'm concerned about my water quality ( being on a well in spring when everything thaws I get abit worried if the fish start acting odd and add it for peace of mind) Carbon or its ilk Purigen aren't used in my tanks as regular parts of maintenece, but are useful tools when needed.

Activated carbon is good if you dont like doing water changes everyweek.. With enough carbon you can get away with one water change every 2-3 Weeks!!! Some people just dont have time for frequent water changes..

Carbon removes a lot more then just meds... removes good and bad, so its not completely useless I think its more people dont enjoy changing it often and if you leave it for too long it leaches back into the aquarium water. Its actually one of the best ways to lower TOC.
