"CLEAN water in a low stress environment."

This is the best answer imo.... unless you see signs of infection ect... clean water is the best answer.

Liberal use of aquarium salt to successfully treat problems with freshwater fish is a myth. The only things I am aware of that salt is truly effective against are nitrite poisoning and the parasite Ich. This article sums it up pretty well. For people who have seen results with using salt.. You can't attribute your fish's recovery to the salt. It may have been able to recover just fine on it's own. Salt is your placebo.

I had a betta at the LFS that lost nearly ALL it's fins to aggressive tank mates. I moved him to a tank with only ember tetras, added some NovAqua+ and did extra water changes.
After about a month he had grown some fin back and could get around better, we called him "Bob", which was about all he did for another few weeks. After about 3 months he looked and swam normal but I think his fins were still growing in as they seemed slightly short.
We had others with injuries at times but Bob was the most severe and his treatment was just clean water and time.
Actually, I can't remember ever treating any of the bettas for fin damage, most healed up in about 2 weeks with good water.
I've never treated with or regularly used aquarium salt.

I recently had a betta that developed a little fuzzy meaty looking spot underneath her eye, so I quarantined her alone in a 2 gal. After about 3 days she looked so much better, it's been about a week or so and she looks completely healed, has gained her color back. I did use salt about a tsp. of it for the whole duration that she was quarantined. I only had her in about 3 days because I needed the tank for some new fry, so I do credit the salt to her speedy recovery.
