Do Araowanas jump out of ponds??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think being in a larger pond will help reduce the jumping greatly. IMO the vast majority of aro's jumping from tanks have been big fish that are approaching (or exceeded) the size limits of their tank. I know my black aro got more and more skittish as it got bigger in my 150g, perhaps with more space and no viewing windows the fish will feel more secure and the risk of jumping will decrease?

Yes they do, can't find the thread now but there was a poster whose silver jumped out of a big pond. Luckly enough he saw it flapping in the grass and was able to put it back in time. I think he covered it with netting after that.
you can build up the sides with rocks, to form a wall. This would be better than plants IMO if you want to leave it open. don't see the point of a covered pond, very unatractive. If it did jump and hit a rock wall it might loose a few scales but not its life.

Well.. I was hoping on provoking some thought... guess I did ok on that point:)

Could net over the pond .. but detracksts from the apearance of the pond and the enjoyment factor.. I will try to get some pic's of the pond..

It will be a while.. a year or so before he would outgrow the tank, so I have got some time., of course we all know how qucik a year or so passes.......

Thanks, I guess he may jump for insects.. and I will have to watch him .. hopefully in time he will learn the limits of his enviornment . By the time I need to move him to the pond, he will be fairly mature... well guess it will be wai and see.

Thanks to all for the info..

Any comments Ideas on the Tank mates I mentioned.. both for th time he is in the tank and then later when moved to the pond?

Also, how are Arowas with planted tanks?

i have or do not remeber seeing much on them being destructive to plants..

This is my FIRST Arowa and I want to avoind the mistakes as much as possible..... I am not foolish enough to believe I will avoid all mishaps.. hell that is life , right?

Thanks again.

Personally i want my arow to jump when I get my pond.

I plan on have a tree laying over the top just for that reason.. maybe a good four feet raising to about six feet.. The bank of course will be sloped down.. And A fence too..

haven't got all the kinks worked out.. But that is a dream in progress :D

Aro will definitely go for insects flying just above the pond. Though netting the pond would look ugly it would save your precious aro jump off the water on the ground.

if it jumps out, it will wriggle back to the water like it does in the wild
Can anybody confirm aros in wild fallen on the ground do really wriggle back to the water? :D

Yea,.. I was kinda thinking on those lines also.. Imagine a Silver Smashing up out of the water to nab a geko or draonfly, doing a tail dnse and hitting the water.

I guess I will do some work on the slope around the pond (Ooppps did I say DO , I ment "have some one DO" some work") But you know htese guys live in the wild.. they gotta know or the species would never have survived , not to jump out of the stream.. Ok maybe it will mess up a time or two early on but if I watcit pretty close in the early days and inshure it gets back in the pod it should learn... I have read they are pretty clever fish, recognize their one feeder/ owner/ care giver , and even take food from the hand, like there belly / flak rubbed, ect (So I have read... not my experience as this will be my first Arawo) so shurely it is within reasonto think it will figure its limits..

Again,.. the problem is a year away.. so.. lets see....

Its pure luck, they dont have a clue which way water is and they'll just flop like any other fish.
