I just put a small (about 3 ") BGK into my 300g but it only comes out of its hiding place a few inches to get food then goes straight back into hiding. He wont even come out if I turn the lights off.

Do they come out more when they get used to the tank? and would it be better if I got another one so they would be a pair?

it will come out more...if you get more the may fight...my 2 have lived together since 2-3" and now are 10" they fight more and more as they are getting older...

mine i have right now was around 5-6 inches when bought three months ago, took the whole time so far but he comes out all the time now, hes even in the brightest tank i have, hes loving it in there, just wait, let him grow, and he'll come out a lot more i suspect

I understand he maybe shy at the moment, there are a few fast moving fish in there aswell. I was just wanting to know if he will come out in the daytime when he gets used to the tank.

Also what is the growth rate like? Will they eat flake and shrimp pellets? He is eating bloodworms at the moment .

It depends...I had one that swam out in the open all the time. The next one hide all the time. The current one will only duck and cover when the tank light is on. The grow pretty slow...maybe half inch a month. They aren't too picky, but I wouldn't do flakes...just doesn't seem filling for these guys.

Mine is out all the time, and he has been that way from the beginning. :) Sometimes it depends on the individual fish.

But I would NOT put another one in with him. Most pet stores have multiple in a tank, but from everyone I have talked to, you should only ever have one in your tank. I had two in the begining, and they were similar in size but would always harass each other. I had to get rid of the other one because I almost lost one.

But then again, some people will tell you it is ok. Just not in my experience. good luck!

Ok thanks I will keep it alone. I put some bloodworms in tonight and it was straight out eating like crazy so maybe it will come out more when it gets settled in.
