One of my female cons had a bright pink/orange belly, real plump. She went from that color to no color in one day. Do cons lose their color when they lay eggs? she is very protective of her cave, but I can't really see in to see if there is any eggs.

So I figure she either laid eggs, or is dying lol.

They aren't both protecting...But the male is the only one she'll let near the cave... I just think its odd how quickly and how drastically her colors changed.

AFAIK, the belly color indicates the female is ready to spawn... Maybe she lost it because, since she laid eggs, she's not ready to spawn anymore. My 0.02 ;)

Best regards.

Daniel.

i have the same prob i cleaned the tank yesterday and tryed to check the cave and got attacked :WHOA:

Yeah, I was gonna say stick your hand in there and if they bite you they have eggs or fry.

Yeah I agree with Daniel. and so long as she is very guarded near their terr. its much more likely a sign that breeding has occured rather than death coming.

personally, while my cons are now constantly breeding, there have been instances similar to your description where nothing happened. Practice runs maybe? good luck.

Sweet, thanks for the replys guys...I think i've got it figured.. The male started guarding the "other cave" where my other female con chills. My guess is, the other female con has laid, and due to the loss of interest from the male, female #1 went out of breeding mode.

my female just laid eggs, and after laying them she went from having bright orange scales on her sides to no color on her sides at all. also, most Cryptoheros have a "black breeding mask" when they are in egg laying/fry rearing mode.

IME convict females only have the color when they are ready to spawn, when not in spawn mode they lack the orange scales.
