Thinking about getting a Carpintis for my 90g. What size do they grow to. Are the females as stunning as males? I mainly want to know if they have a friendly wet pet kinda attitude.

Hello everyone,

Does anybody have any info on this set up? I'd like to get a Midevil but a 90g seems a bit small for them at adult size. However I do see some members keep them in a 90g. I believe H.Carpintis get a bit smaller. I will probably order fish online since my LFS's pretty much suck. As said before, I'm looking for some personality in a fish. Does anyone know how owner friendly Carpintis are? Any info is appreciated.

Carpintis is a good choice for that tank size. But IMO Oscars and amphs generally have the typical wet pet character . Carpintis may get that wet pet character if you get them real small and groom them right.

I had a cyanoguttatus for a few weeks, got it about 2.5 inches. It didn’t last long but was very interactive and intelligent. I’d say a carpintis wouldn’t be too different.
If you want an amphilophus cichlid, sagittaes max at 12-13 inches.

Thanks puSkar,

I was thinking about getting 5 and picking my favorite one. I'm looking to get juvies and growing them out together. I have an LFS that could take the rest. If not would a Midevil work in a 90g?

Tank size is a debatable topic, lots of different opinions. I personally think a 90 gallon would be about the minimum for a fish like a carpintis or midevil. 125 would be better, but with proper maintenance a 90 could be done.
I do think carpintis have nice personality, they may not "glass bang" as much as an amphilophus would, if that is what you are looking for. But certainly can be taught to eat from your hands, that sort of thing.

Thanks puSkar,

I'd say it will probably. They tend to stop growing at that 10-12" range. Anything larger will take at least 4-5 yrs. Don't know about genetics at your place but this is what I typically see here in India.
Cheers ?

Thanks Deadeye,

Those Sagittae look great. Check out Jexnell's, its pretty sweet. I know Amph's have good personality usually. The only other Amph I can think for a 90g is Lyonsi but they are quite rare.

Thanks for the info Deadeye and puSkar.

I'm really liking the looks of H.Carpintis, but the Midevil's personality seems to really shine for most keepers. TUIC has both right now (A.Labatius), but I have to cycle my tank from scratch. Hope TUIC still has these fish in a month from now.

Both are pretty common, I wouldn’t worry.
