I believe a 90 would be OK if just the 1 carpintus as an adult, no other fish.
If you want it to be personable (anthropomorphic) then its better without other fish anyway..
Other fish tend to make cichlids more fish like, less responsive to human interaction.

He duanes duanes ,

If I went solo for my Carpintis could I add any dithers/schools? What about a couple of pictus cats? It seems like it would give the tank a little more life.

They are opportunists and will probably eat any dithers close to small enough.
And if you want interactive, the cats might remove that likelihood, and make it more "fish" normal.
Because I grew about half dozen out together, and after needing to remove others once they became a pair,, there was never any of that anthropomorphic type human we pet development interaction.

Hey duanes duanes ,

I appreciate your reply. Sounds like completely solo is the way to go. I will surely take your experience and advise when stocking my tank.

Thanks again!

When it is young it wouldn’t hurt to get a school of dithers so it is comfortable, but when it is an adult wet pet behavior is best seen alone. Plus like duanes duanes said those large cichlids make a meal out of anything small enough.
