Well do they? Mine swims around all day, and hides in his home, and then he swims all night. When does he sleep with his busy schedule?

Good question. I have noticed that too. If I wake up at night, they are always somewhat active. They come out more at night too.

By the way, I am not certain if fish sleep like we do. I think they go into a light sleep, ready to dart at the slightest disturbance. My cichlids go into a dormant phase but there is always one that stirs things up when the others seem to be just about to doze off.

Some species only sleep at small periods at a time...
-snapple fact-Bullfrogs(american) are the only species in the world that never sleeps/drinks
-snapple fact- A seal only sleeps for 1 and a 1/2 minutes at a time...

my oscars used to float on their sides right near the surface and just drift a long, slowly paddling with one fin. Then I would turn the light on and they would wake up and freak out.

Most all fish spend time in an energy-saving state that can be called
"rest", and we might even call their behavior "sleep", though it is probably
different than "sleep" in most land animals. Many fish, like perch, pike rest on or under logs at night. I do a lot of night fishing and have caught a lot of big fish at night so they do feed throught the night.

Many fish "rest" or "sleep" during the day and are active at night instead, but almost all fish sleep.

Parts of a fish's brain does shut off for "resting", while other parts are on for defense....When certain parts are rested, then they turn on and the other parts are shut off.....

yea, its like a defense mechanism as they always have to be alert. a lot (if not all) knives are nocturnal anyway

clown knifes are noctural

they use an electro magnetic field to navigate in the darkness

yes I know that, but that really has nothing to do with the question I am asking.
