Hey everyone. I've read that some people don't feed their fish everyday. They say it's because fish in the wild don't eat everyday. Is this true? I know some animals, (like reptiles) don't need to eat everyday or even every week. I thought it was because they don't use much energy to constantly move. But a fish is always moving. Even when it's "sleeping" it still moves some parts of its body to stay in place. Does anyone have any hard facts that fish fast in the wild? I feed my fish everyday, and they eat everyday. Why don't they fast in my tank like in the wild? I think that if any of my fish didn't eat and fasted, I would start to worry. I just want to find out the truth. The Doctor.

Mouth brooding fish such as Aros fast all the time, no choice considering they have their babies/eggs in their mouths!

Fish fast in the wild with no choice.....Sometimes there just is not any food....

For example:During the Amazon's "dry"spells, pools are created fom dried up streams.....These fish sometimes prey on each other untill there is no more other prey, or when the rains come back.....O.K., maybe it is not technically fasting, but this is my 2 cents on why fish may starve in the wild..

I personally dont think so unless mother nature forces them to. There are BOAT loads of food for fish in the wild. Iv never seen a aquarium fish out grow a wild fish, so thats what debunks this myth for me.

Fresh import fish is always skinny, so no, they don't get food everyday in the wild. Food is not the reason why fish grow big in the wild than in the aquarium. Aquarium size, water quality are the two main reasons that "stunt" the grow of fish that is keep in the aquarium

Whether or not a fish eats everyday in the wild depends on its location, habitat and feeding methods. Small invertebreas can usually eat constanty throughout the day whilst big sharks may not get a meal for a few weeks.

Fish fasting in the wild is very common. Sharks will go weeks after eating. Same with a lot of the 'top end' predatory fish. Ambush hunting fish are the same way.

Aquarium mbuna almost always outgrow the wild species...

They dont fast on purpose in the wild but some days/weeks food can be hard to come by. They are like dogs...when you give them food they eat it all or until they are as full as can be. Its instinct because they might not have a meal the next day. They eat whenever they can and dont whenever they cant.
