Whatup all u people of monster fish keepers I don’t own a tank or any fish but I was just thinking if u was to take a fish and put it in a tank with no rocks or sand or decorations or anything like u have a fancy setup with the filter out of the tank and everything just glass water and fish will that fish become depressed or something idk I just think the thought of that is horrible and kinda hilarious at the same time anyways let me know peeps -Creampieguy69

I believe some fish can and will...

For example certain puffers have a tendency to start glass surfing if kept in bare tanks for extended periods of time as they seem to benefit from a complex tank setup which they can hunt and explore in...

I’ve seen plenty of puffers over the years kept in bare tanks that looked pretty miserable but once transferred into a well decorated tank their color will brighten up a lot more and actually use up a lot if not all the space provided exploring. Where as when kept in a plain glass box they would just move up and down / side to side glass surfing or hang out in a corner of the tank looking very dark and miserable...

So imo i wouldn’t be surprised if it was the same for other species of fish...

Welcome aboard

Believe it or not some species of fish kept in home aquariums are very interactive with their owners. Yes I believe a fish can get bored.

I prefer to keep smaller fish in my 180g planted tank. The world is much bigger for a Tetra in my 180g than it is for an Oscar. My theory is fish should be able to swim a significant distance relative to their size before having to turn around and go the opposite direction. I also think this makes them much more fun to watch.

P.S. My fish LOVE the powerhead I put in the bottom back of my tank to improve circulation! They dive into the current from the powerhead, swim several minutes then go to another area of the tank to explore or just hang out.

A large well scaped aquarium can be breathtaking, a real focal point in your home. Who wants to watch fish swim around in a plain glass box with nothing in it whatsoever?

I'd get extremely bored of looking at such a set up and i'm sure the fish are effected in some capacity too. And the more natural their surroundings the more likely you'll witness natural behaviour/appearance.

Creampieguy69? Lol ok dude

Bored ? I dont think so, the fish actually is want and need to the good parameters water only that is in my opinion except the wild caught or shy fish

I dont think it is so much BORED as it is insecure and stressed many fish like large cichlids can thrive in a bare tank I had to keep my oscar pair in a bare tank because the would pick up rocks and ram the glass. They did not seem to become depressed because of it but they were much more active when I was near the tank as oppose to away. But many fish like puffers as stated above really seem to enjoy and thrive in a well decorated tank but the reason they dont thrive in a bare tank is not because of boredom but because of lack of security they feel exposed. Us humans tend to personify animals especially our pets we think that they think like us when it reality that is not the case if you put a human in a empty room for its whole life they will get bored and depressed because they have no source of entertainment while fish dont NEED entertainment sure they can benifite from interaction with other fish and people but they dont need it to survive and thrive. The exeption being schooling fish but again they dont get lonley with out a school they just feel vulnerable and unprotected because in the wild they would get picked off easily so they hide all the time.
Hope that helps
