i am a shift worker and i am awake overnight my oscar wont sleep if there is the slightest movement or hint of light anywhere in the house , he hovers around waiting to be fed is this bad for him all of the other fish sleep.

how do you know that the fish is not getting any sleep? surely you don't watch him all night long. maybe he sleeps when you're not around. all animals need sleep. it allows for the body and brain to rest and recover from daily stresses. sleep is mandatory. without it, there is a breakdown of the body and nuerological system, in particular.

I don't think they "sleep" in a conventional sense, but they certainly do seem to rest . . . mine definitely act differently whether the lights are on or not, and if I were to go in the room at 4am or so, they would hardly be moving . . .

It sure seems like mine sleep. In the mornings you can tell that they are at least in a resting mode. They are dark, and it takes mine at least 20 minutes to start swimming around the tank.

my midas sleep everynight.
apparently from 11 pm - 7 am

lights go off - he's restless.
lights go on - he's chillin in his pots and his eyes lack colour

15 minutes later he's a little more roudy.

Just because fish have no eyelids and can't close their eyes, does not mean they don't actually sleep.

Fish don't sleep, but they need resting periods. There's a long thread on here that explains everything very in depth.

Every Red devil/midas that I've ever had has always slept. My large female turns completely white and then within a couple of minutes with the light on, she's red and active.

Fish sleep i have no doubt this is not the question , my question is do they need it as my fish seem to get little or no sleep due to the hours i keep and i am wondering if this will harm them long term.

GOOD QUESTION !!! But I think that fish sleep, maybe not the way we do, but they do sleep. Everything sleeps (IF YOU DONT SLEEP YOU DIE) Think about it, So why dont fish sleep??? Maybe it is like a trance like state(HAHA).
