i know this is a random and somewhat stupid question, but im wondering
do they hear, smell, taste?

My guess is yes, yes and yes.

They hear because when you hit the glass, they all go run and hide.
They smell because that's, when my catfish come out and eat.
They taste because some fish like certain ood, while some other fish won't like the same food.

the lateral line provides their sense of hearing so to speak. it is very sensitive to tiny vibrations. smelling i would say yes otherwise how do they know where to scavenge for food in the wild. and if you look close they have what could be likened to nostrels probably going to some sort of highly evolved organ similar to a snakes jacobsons organ.
as for taste im unsure. i think there must be something because when they pick up a bit of poo its quickly spat out.

I was going to point out the lateral line. Well done.;) :D

that all makes sense
thanks

I don't think they really smell. Taste underwater is basically the same as smell in air.

There is no such thing as a stupid question, IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER!!! LOL

I also would say yes to all just from observing my fish.
Also, what is the latteral line (and this isn't a stupid question cos i don't know the answer)?????
