Do fish smell or hear?

I dont agree with the hit the glass thing, i thing the run and hide because you scared them with a moving object, if i run by my tank the scatter too.. but i do think fish hear cause when i crack the lid on the shimp they sit at the top waiting...
when i walk by my shellie tank they all go hide in their shells.. when i open the lid to my planted tank the fish all swim to the top waiting for food =]

Yes to all. In fact their sense of smell is something like one million times as sensitive as ours. Think of fishing: for several species (catfish, halibut) the presentation doesn't matter, the smell does. I'm sure they taste as certian foods are preferred. They do have hearing with ears, yes your fish has ears, and have the added plus of the lateral line to detect movements around them.

The thing about that is sounds waves don't pass from air to water we'll they mostly bunce off sound that travels threw air travels around 600 MPH a little faster i can't remember the exact speed off the top of my head but sound waves under water travel aound 5 times faster because water is alot more dense then Air so if you yell at your tank or make any laoud noice it mainy bouces off and the fish have no idea your doing any thing besides what they see but if you made a noice under water if would freak the hell out of them and when you bang or knock on the glass it sends vibrations threw the water which fish pick up with there lateral line which can scare then as we'll
