How exactly would u go about hand feeding a gar? they have such a fast and sudden snap, its still scary even when expected... can they be trained to be petted? does their bite hurt? Im planning to try and hand feed him freeze dried krill, cant hand feed him pellets my finger would be the target...

about the jumping/leaping, i know mine gets startled easily and would perform such a maneuver and torpedo around the tank, but what would make them leap by themselves in dark?

That is exactly how i feed my gar, to insure he is eating properly. I usually feed him tiliapia strips. I cut them about 3" or so and dangle about an inch of it in the water. he comes to the top and snatches it out of my fingers. I am sure the bite will hurt considering the needle like teeth but i have never been bitten. Petting comes with hand feeding because your gar will learn to trust you. I pet mine every once in a while but petting generally is not good for a fish because it can damage their slime coat.

Bleeds a lot, hurts a lot.

I have an 8" gar and i just got three 5-6" gars.... the teeth are very small they look like needles indeed but im not sure if long enough to penetrate finger skin would it still bleed and hurt allot? silly i know, but i do insist on training to hand feed them and would like to know what to expect before i even actually do it. Their quick instant reflex still makes me jump.gar feeding 3.jpg

if those teeth are longer than 1mm then you will see some blood, try it!;)
