Do gill covers grow back?

I bought a two inch black nasty the other day, and just noticed part of his gill cover is missing. Not sure if it is a birth defect, or if he was beat up before. If it was a wound, will it grow back?

do you have a pic you can put? had a cichlid get the tip of his bit and ripped off by a jag but i had to separate and care and it grew back fine but a little slow

It's not enough to show up in a picture. Plus he won't stop swimming. It looks like it would be real noticeable when he gets big. I was hoping it would grow back.
