Im pretty new to the stingray scene and ive been researching as much as possible over the last six months or so preparing for my first ray purchase. One thing that ive noticed among ray enthusiast is hybrids seem to be more excepted here, more so than in any other species of fish breeding. Ive decided that Im gonna go for a couple marble motoro for my first ray tank, and try my hand at breeding, thing is I want to be sure that im getting pure bred stock to start with!!! So I want to know everyones take on...

Do you think people that breed and sale hybrids hurt the integrity of the stingray hobby?!?!?

No. Some like them some don't. Just make sure to look over the ray really well when you buy and make sure to see mom and dad to see what breed they are or if they look like hybrids.

It's not what breed a ray is now its what they look like that demands the higher price

I personally would like to know what parents my rays come from but it's not easy when buying from Asia

Things will become a bit messy in a few years me thinks

Yeah thats what I thought, dont get me wrong, I like some of the hybrids ypu guys are breeding.. But the main reason I need a pure bred marble is I dont want to get a ray that will out grow the tanks I have availible, and I dont want to pay marble motoro price for a regular motoro/marble ray!!

Thanks for the advice... I dont think its gonna be possible to see parents since I will be ordering from a vendor.. But I think this vendor is reputable here so im willing to take a chance

If you are looking for marbles my friend here breeds them and his female is pregnant right now. I think it is very reasonable to ask to.see pics of mom and dad anytime you purchase from a person directly not a collector of fish from the wild and some other times of course.

I don't know too much about cichlids, but my impression is that hybridization there has some nasty effects on the long-term health and viability of the species. With rays, the ones we're breeding really seem to be different variants of the same underlying species.

(I'm kind of shooting my mouth off here without having much of a clue what I'm talking about, so if anyone has corrections, please jump in.)
