These are 2 jack dempseys. I bought the one I think is a male because j want them to spawn. They did the "breeding dance" with the flapping around, fin whipping, and lip locking followed by the male chasing the female. That was a week ago and now they just swim around together. The male has been digging rocks out of the cave in the ship and also next to the rocks. My catfish went in the ship and kinda took over. My question is why haven't they laid eggs? I have the water temp around 82, its hard water with the right amount of terra aquasafe plus, there is a cave (the ship) and I made a little cave type thing with a flat rock underneath. Theyve paired up from what I can tell and seem to be showing the behavior but havent spawned. Could the catfish (RTC) being there scare them from laying? I also have a small pleco and a dragon goby. I'm teing to sell the rtc as well. Any advice?

Nice pair you got there i realy like you're male nice jacks man what size are they? My jacks laid about a month ago and now have tons of fry but what yore saying sounds about right the lipping and tail smacking it took mine a month after pairing to lay and about another month and a half to lay again i found that high protein foods and weakly water changes works and of cours a lil raise in temp you'll know when its time thell both pick a spot and clean the area and the females tube will begin to show i tried to make a spot for them to lay twice and both times they chose there own so dont be surprised if they choose there own spot to lay good luck hope i was of some help:D

The male is chasing her around right now and isn't stopping. It looks like he's trying to bite her, but shes keeping her full color. Is this normal or is it just aggression toward her?

Tupe is like a light brown to gray clear color if that makes any sense lol and you'll see bothy of the in the breading spot she will whip back and forth over the flat serfice she has chosen laying eggs the male will do the same after her to fertilize them they both will become extremely agreasive and protective of the breading spot and will not allow any other tankmates to come near just keep an eye out for the tube once its out its pretty easy to tell it wont pop all the way out right away at least my females didnt but soon as i seen it she laid later that day like within the hour
