Do I need a clean up crew for a Mbuna tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Petricola will be fine with mbuna believe me. The mbuna don't mess with them. Mine learned the hard way when I first added the catfish. I think they have spikes or something, I just know the mbuna left them alone in a hurry. They will eat any and all fry they find though so if you want baby mbuna then avoid the catfish.

crayfish man. there so underrated as poop eaters. just make sure your mbunas arent to small because the crays might just eat them

so sounds like i don't NEED a clean up crew, but after having my cory's i know like having some bottom feeders, or fish hanginin out around the substrate.

how will syno cats do wit crushed coral?

hmmm, did a lil reading on crayfish and it sounds like having 1 might be pretty fun.....what would be "too small" not sure what size i'll be getting my mbuna's (hell, i'm still trying to figure out a stock list. lol)

I always thought that crayfish and crabs were a horrible mix for a Mbuna tank. Everything I've read has said that they'll be fine for a while, but the cichlids will destroy them once they've molted and become vulnerable. I was looking at a pair of blue crays for my 110 and decided against it because of that reason.

so went to a new lfs today and saw some syno and hi fin cats. dude was tellin me clown loaches would be okay and that they're slow growers, but i only have a 55, and if i upgrade tank size in the future, it'll prolly be to go salt in a year....so i really don't wanna get a fish that will outgrow my tank.

maybe do a pair of hi fin cats then 2 species x 4 (1:3 male:female) then 2 other males that don't look similar in color to the other 2. only have AC 110 so still gotta consider bio load

I'm no expert, but have had african's off and on for 30 years. You really don't need a clean up crew, but as sugggested above, there are many cool "cats" and others that I think make an african tank more interesting. Another suggestion is a rainbow shark. They seem to be able to eat algae off of rocks and plants that the africans don't eat. I have seen them keep the holy rock staying quite white. Also, I wouldn't put any plecos in ther until you actually have some algae in there for them to eat. good luck and let us know what you decide.

clown loaches do not take to hard water well. They can survive, but do not do well. This is the information that was passed on to me from Ewurm.
Absolutely true.:iagree:

Had no issues with my Synodontis eupterus and Synodontis ocellifer but they kinda glide rather than actually "crawl" on the bottom.
