Of course I've been told that I don't have intelligent filtration
Over filtration is never a bad thing. But I think you can wait it out.

I like having the AC on there because I rinse it weekly to help remove a portion of waste from the system each week along with the water change/gravel vacuuming.

if you have money burning a hole in your pocket or you are bored with your tank and just want to do something. Then maybe it is time for you to step up to BIG BOY status and start gathering sump plans and parts.
Alot of people including myself spend years and hundreds of dollars messing around with rinky dink HOB's and canisters before steping up to the plate and getting good filtration.
In the end if you are going to be a lifer in the aquarium hobby you will have sump filtration. And then you will look back and think about all the money and time you wasted with Hob's and canisters.
Not trying to offend anyone but its true.
