do I NEED an air pump?

the way you have it should be fine if your tank is open above the agitation, otherwise I'd do as doomiedee suggested.

I was just researching about this, I also dislike the air pump noise and I had a Koralia power head laying around so I decided to give it a try and pointed the power head pointing upwards to slightly agitate the surface without making to much water splashing noise and it's day two and the fish are doing just fine. Not only did I do this for the air pump noise factor but for the "clear water look" without to many fine bubbles in the tank what originally my Jebo power head use to do. 😁😁😁😁

My AC 500's create surface agitation as the water enter the tanks. I also have a Powerhead with a sponge on it adjusted for circulation and slight aeration in each tank as well.

powerheads seem to be better though they do need 2 b cleaned 2 often

airpumps put on timers may work if u really like the bubbles look

may want to run both along w/ a skimmer or out of tank filter
