Quick question about carbon. I recently had ick in my tank and I had to remove the carbon from my canister because the carbon will remove the medication from the water. So I was thinking, if I have carbon in my canister and I do a water change and add water conditioner, will it remove that the conditioner and make my water toxic because it didnt remove the chlorine and such? What if I added prime to lower nitrates or something, will the carbon take it out of the water before it can do its job? You get what I am asking. I have been running without carbon for 6 days n tank is still crystal clear (Ich has been gone for 2 day), tank is healthier than ever.

the carbon will remove the chlorine too no?

I am not sure thats why I am asking. I use an aqueon water changing kit an it puts water straight outta the sink into the tank. I put conditioner in right after n stir it, but is the carbon removing the conditioner and any other helpful chemicals I put in?

after googling it carbon will absorb chlorine too. so i suppose if the prime hasnt changed it the carbon will get it eventually.

Oh ok thanks, I should of just googled it I guess. Good to know, I will prob cut my doses of conditioner in half when I do my WC, this way it is still removing the chlorine, but I am saving some as well. I guess the carbon takes every sort of chemical out of the water, good to know....

it also takes the ammonia your beneficial bacteria use to grow so there's that to think about.

Hmm, good point. My tank is striving without it so I am thinking about leaving it out and putting another sort of substrate in its place, such as a sponge or something. If it takes out all chemicals it is also taking out benifical chemicals. Do you run carbon filters in your tank? I do frequent water changes so I am not really benifiting from its polishing affects, maybe I will cut down on my carbon use.

I had a lot of problems with my tank when I ran carbon. Pulled it out and added sponges instead. I dont see and need to run it.

Not only is it absorbing, but it will eventually leach everything it absorbs back into the water if not changed often. I don't use carbon because it's useless, water changes get the job done. If your looking to get something to replace carbon you should giving purigen a look up.
