Do I need more clowns?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
See what happens when you add the new 6"ers...

They all seem to be coming around, I also went ahead and treated them all with levimasole because I lost my tiniest one to skinny disease so that may be making the difference as well.
Their black stripes are darkening up and they are doing more clowning.... around surfing the corners of the tank in a big ball and also squabbling amongst themselves to establish rank.

I'm guessing they just need longer than most fish to adjust to their enviroment and
really feel at home.

I also moved my pictus catfish into their tank and he seems to be acting like a dither getting them even more active and brave.

I usually drop food in on both sides of the tank but in the same places each time, that way everyone has a chance to get some and they know exactly where to look.

Right now I'm trying to decide how much to feed when it comes to the loaches. I like to give them frozen food as much as possible and also the snails from my other tanks. they get frozen bloodworms, freshwater frenzy, some loaded mysis shrimp and turkey heart and some other stuff ( not all at once) all in a frozen multipack, they go nuts for all of it. I also give mussels when I can and their staple is hikari sinking wafers.

So for 11 loaches ranging from 2.5 to 6 inches, one pictus cat and a gold ram how much sinking food or frozen cubes should I be feeding for optimum growth but without mucking up my water.(which is overfiltered and changed weekly)

I have yet to notice a problem with mine not eating food. Doesn't seem to matter how much I feed. I would feed an amount that the loaches will eat in about 5 minutes. Keep an eye on your nitrates and adjust feeding and/or water changes accordingly.

Having 12 + really helps bring them out and about. they're a shoaling fish... if you only have a few and they don't travel together, they'll be scared.
:iagree:
Even though it´s not a must, you will have more from your loaches when they´re in a large schoal. At about a dozen animals mine started getting bold, at about 20 animals they pretty much lost all fear. Above 20 animals there wasn´t much of a change in behaviour anymore... they just won´t leave you alone :D.

My wife and i are also out a lot during the day and have the lighting on from 2 - 11 pm. 2.30 - 5 is a sunburst period where the lighting gets doubled. The rest of the time we only have 60 watts of lighting. In the evening the cls come to the end of the tank and watch tv with us... how can i tell? They sit in a slightly different spot when we sit on the couch but only read or chat!

i have 6 in my 210 with a bunch of aggressive cichlids. my pack of 6 arent skittish at all. theyre always swimming about and swim up to the top when i approach the tank. other than that, theyre usually passed out on their side out in the open.

in the evening though, they disappear, nowhere to be found
