I've just set up a new 56 gallon tank. It's running a Hagen Fluval 305 with the standard "floss wall", pre-filter media in the bottom (first) basket, biomax in the middle (second) basket, and polishing pads in the top (third) basket. I think the polishing pads might clog too easily, so I may replace them with more biomax.

Here's the question: I ordered an Emperor 400 for $60, but I'm thinking it's a bit overkill now. Do I need it?

It certainly won't hurt. I say add it with all bio media.

The HOB didn't even arrive yet, so I may cancel the order. Maybe I'll get the smaller one with one bio wheel?

I know it's best to have too much rather than not enough, and I know a lot of people on this site overfilter, and I'm sure it helps with maintenance, but I think I may just keep the pair of JDs (not mating, yet) and see what happens.

do what your pockets say is right lol, but seriously the word overfiltration shouldnt exist.

I have a 55 gallon and when I used my Fluval 304 on it, I couldn't keep the tank filtered enough to keep healthy fish.

I had lots of African Mbuna's so there was a large bio load that the 304 couldn't handle. I had to move to another filter. The Fx5 :)

I've heard nothing but rave reviews about the FX5, but I think it's overkill for my mere 56 gal. I would probably switch to an Eheim before declaring my love for Fluval, just to be honest.

As you can see, I only have a pair of small JDs, not even mating yet (I think one male one female, but not sure after looking at so many pics). I think the 305 will do. I returned the Emperor 400 and took a look at the smaller Emperor 280, but I don't think I want it messing up my nice sleek black setup. :D
