Do I need other things for my tank?

Newbee alert! How do you put more bio-media in a Penguin 350? Which one is the bio-media? Is it the cartridge or the wheel iself? I'm assuming its the wheel 'coz its the only part of the filter that you can put more.

Thanks for the link. I tend to over-research things that I want to do, unfortunately, it doesn't apply to me and my endeavors at school...

Regarding the extra media, that's something on the expensive side for me considering that you have to change it every month. I doubt if anyone changes their filter media once a monce. Once every two month sounds reasonable.

I've read around here that a wet/dry filter (sump) is the best type of filteration. I am looking at making one considering that I have an empty 15-gallon hanging around. Can I use this kind of filter in a glass tank. I will not be drilling any holes in it because its glass and I don't have tools and what not.

I guess I need to do more research on this type of filteration

I guess I can use a powerhead to pump water out of main tank to the sump right? Then another more stronger pump to redirect the water back to the main tank.

In my opinion, I think it would be a good idea to stick with a hang off the tank type of filter 'coz there is no risk of overflow specially that I live in an apartment complex and the land lord doesn't know that I have a fish tank...

You clean the filter material, don't thro it out like the manuf. wants you to...remember they make money selling it ;) .

1) Just get 2 or 3 sets,

2) Set the system up with the extra material

3) Clean half of all the materail every month (or 1-2 wks you'll be able to tell) in used tank water from the just done W/C. This way you always have bio-media in the filter. If at some point you think you need to wash them again only do half and replace it with the new stuff (when you wash them with soap and water make sure you rinse them thoroughly, then let dry and use the next time you change one out.. Rotate material as needed.

4) Poly-fil is about $4. US for a good size bag, this can just be thrown away if it's used as a pre-filter if you wish. If you use it as the last filter (for more bio-material, rinse it in used tank water).

Glass tanks are great, look around on here, someone just finished a really nice one (and easy too).

You never pump water out of a tank unless it's for a gravity return filter (above your tank level). It's almost imposible to balance the pumps (even identicle ones).

Water drains out of the tank as the pump in the sump puts water into the tank.

If you don't feel comfortable with making a W/D right now, go with the HOBs, and study up on the W/D's and work into one they really are quite simple.
