Do I need to do water changes??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have my rays currently in a 280 gal. tank with a 100gal sump powering the filter. I agree with Zoodiver. I do water changes once every 2-3weeks. usually 100-150gals WC. I use Pothos plants to eat up my nitrates tho. after the 3rd month of doing this SAME routine religiously my test result were... ammonia - 0 nitrite - 0 and nitrates at 20-40ppm If every1 is worried about nitrates then throw some pothos plants in ur sump and watch as your nitrates drastically go down...

I am guilty of bashing an OP for what I and others on here would call and dumb post, but we really need to stop doing that, bc it will make them leave and not come back for help and keeps them from posting pics of their rays.

Heatha - depending on ur filtration system, and IF u use plants to help with the filtration i would say you might do a 30% WC once a week OR 40-50% WC every other week. From what i have learned on here, more water changes the better. cleaner water always helps your fish survive and thrive in captivity. It really depends on your setup when you need to do water changes.

I personally know a user on here that used to breed motoro rays in an 8x4 pond and did water changes once a month.... and they bred motoro 3-4times a year! sooo they were obviously doing right with their rays. depends on your filtering system and all that i think

Jon M. you really have no right to bash the OP.

Heatha.... If you have any questions you can PM me and I won't down grade you with any of your question...

Its pple like Jon M. that makes alot of pple leave this site... alot of the smarter pple and more knowledgable

everything was perfect when we tested it.

no such thing as "everything was perfect". there is no "perfect" pH reading, and if nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia reading all are 0, it indicated a problem (uncycled tank, incorrect reading), unless you tank is heavily planted which it isnt.

i saved those rays from a horrible pet store!!! I've had one of my rays for over a year..... and i suggest you ask questions before you accuse me of letting this happen to those rays

I congradulate you for saving those rays heather and there is no denying they do look better than before but please listen to the good advise that some of us are giving you and do 30% wc weekly and buy a set of liquid test kits and test your water on your own. We all make mistakes and i think posting a question like the one you asked was a big 1 but at least you were not afraid to ask.
Keep us posted and hope everything goes well.

Part of fish keeping is doing water changes.

Think about it this way OP... put yourself in a tank, slap on some filters.. would you like living in your own waste and uneaten food? Filters no matter how good do no filter out everything. Now, would you want your fish to live in their own filth?

I have over 50+ tanks, and I do water changes daily. Yes, it's time consuming, and no you don't need to do water changes this often, but you can't just not do water changes. Water changes need to be done, and with fish that give off that much bioload, you need to do them about once a week of about 40-60%. Again, just my opinion.

This is a public forum, and when you post something of this nature, you are going to get people who think you are serious, and you are going to get people who think you are trolling. It takes more than a novice to take care of rays, so I know that you should know about water changes, and test kits etc.. I am honestly going to say that this entire thread is you being lazy and not wanting to have to do anything with you tank, and just expect it to stay pretty.

So, get off your ***, spend $25 on a test kit, and learn the meaning of work ethic. You have to work for what you want, and if you want a pretty tank, then you need to perform maintenance or everything is going to suffer and die, and then the next thing we know you will be back on here crying.

You posted a question, and you got answers.. not the one you were looking for, so you have to get all defensive. There are ALWAYS going to be people like Jon M and me, who frankly don't care what your comebacks are.. you post a question, we're going to answer it.. that's life.

Everyone needs to calm down.

Seasoned members: rather than getting rude with this member, try to be helpful. Advice is a two way street. The person asking has to accept it, you need to give it. Many of you are on the verge of getting infractions for how you handled this. Our purpose here on MFK isn't to demean members that are less experienced, but to encourage them to move to the next level. Telling them to sell their stuff, and get out of the hobby, makes me sick. Attitudes like this are worse than any other, and I don't want to see it anymore.

Original poster: These members are experienced fish keepers, that are trying to help you. If you don't like what someone says, ignore it or report it to the staff. Acting out the way you have will only lead to problems.

I agree, lets be a little more kind with our advice, although this very well could be a troll.
Respond and help someone in a way you would like to be helped, don't rude about it, just politely try and correct there bad ways

thank you wyldfya. Thats what i was trying to tell them. Stop being so offensive and harsh. 1 day you might need help and to one person its a no brainer on the answer but to another they need the advise. IF we answer questions in a professional manner then that person will learn and stay with the site and their rays will prosper. IF we don't then when the OP has another question that could be VERY important regarding their rays health and safety, the OP won't ask, and the rays could/will suffer.

Down grading pple helps no situation.

Back to topic, would there be a system/tank volume or configuration, surface area or stocking density wherein (assuming normal/appropriate filtration, no plants & no evaporation) one would't need to swap water? 14 guppies in a swimming pool?
What part of the ecosystem deals with organics & hormones etc...?
