Do I need to sift sand?

Unless you have a deep undisturbed sand bed then you don't really have to worry about pockets of toxic gas. What you should be worrying about is detritus and waste accumulating within. As most of us keep large predatory fish, they get fed messy raw foods and produce a lot of waste IMO it is essential to deeply penetrate the sand in order to get a good clean

well once a week I hover a 1 inch siphon hose over the sand as I do my water changes to pick up the waste, but I heard alot about gas pockets under the sand.

Gotta be careful wit them.....I started out with 15 and in four months I had over 1000.....def. get a snail eater to keep them in check.

Im going to have to just use my screper then to dig in the sand after I siphon and do water change. if I dig before I siphon, then I will just push the waste under the sand/
