Ceramic doesnt break down unless physically broken, try fluval bio max, more pourus then ac bio. Just shake it in tank water once in awhile!

If you have a lot of live plants in your tank than the carbon isn't necessary at all unless you have stocking that puts a very high load on the tank. If you have no live plants at all and choose to remove the carbon pay close attention to your levels and test the water frequently to see how the system handles.
Ceramic breaks down. Depending on the type and shape of the media it could take years, but even from the water flow alone without bacteria you'd eventually get a bunch of sand!
Fluval says IT NEVER BREAKS DOWN! Ive been running ac110 bio for over a year and it looks exactly the same! Api chem stars will last a lifetime too! But my fluval cnodes do seem a little sketchy but they are the most pourus media ive ever had or seen on the market
