do Indos need salt added to there tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Salt is not neceessary for dats except for the silver dat ;)

Many people confuse this concept. American Tigerfish (AT/Silver Dats) are/can be brackish but can be transitioned to total Freshwater. I add "aquarium salt" to all my FW tanks after a water change anyway...But, my tanks are no where near brackish. If you purchase an indo that an LFS has in brackish though, you need to very slowly acclimate it to your fresh water tank.

I don't use salt on any of my FW tanks but I'm fairly new to Datnoids, maybe now is a good time to start using salt with my w/c. Is it a good idea to add salt for Datnoids? If so, how much?

Salt is optional for freshwater fish. It is up to you whether to add it or not although in most freshwater fish's cases, salt is not necessary and in the long run, it can harm most fish especially towards those who cannot handle added electrolytes long-term. Those from soft and acidic waters for instance are at a risk of being affected by the salt.

A few people already mentioned salt is not necessary. Why do you feel the need to add it? There is always the risk of developing salt-resistant strains of ich which can be more difficult to get rid of compared to the ones who have yet to settle in an environment with salt added. The same thing can be said with a few other health issues. If it is not broken, don't meddle with it.;)

definitely not. is it clear yet, lol. :D

I'm with Lupin. Salt is great when you get a problem, but is not necessary when there is not a problem.

IT's are fresh water fish. AT's and NGT's are the only Dats found in brackish conditions in the wild.
