i was at the beach yesterday, and some kid, probably like 8 years old, slowly walks out of the water and up to his mom and says how he got stung by a jellyfish and it really hurts. he's holding his stung arm like its been broken or something. his mom tells him to walk over to the lifeguard chair with his brother. i look up and say that, seeing as the lifeguard chair is somewhat far away, he may as well stay put, because the pain will have subsided by the time he gets to the chair.
Being an 8-yr-old kid, he thinks that his injury is far worse than i can comprehend, so he walks over to the chair, and i resume what i was doing.
We have lion's mane jellyfish in long island sound, and those are the only stinging jellies that we see at the beaches here. we never get any big ones... only up to about 8"-9" bell diameter. ive been stung by these (was swimming once and my arm brushed one, but the current caused its tentacles to wrap around my arm... other times i'm just walking and my leg hits one...) and they dont hurt much. the sting feels similar too when you put hydrogen peroxide on a cut... sort of a semi-painful tingling.
has anyone else been stung by these? do you feel pain when youre stung by them?
