Do monoculus get spangling on the dorsal?

It's rather easy finding true mono's then there is to finding true ocell's.

OP, Yes mono's can get "spangles" on their dorsal fins. Look up: Cichla monoculus "Enviria Lake" and Cichla monoculus "Tarapoto". OP, your mono has great potential.

Thanks, I looked them up on that page that has a bunch of SA species photos and the Enviria looks really boss, the Tarapoto didn't have any spangling though. I hope he turns out nice, I already see the tail spotting developing as well.

The Tarapoto have more on their "soft" dorsal fins then they do on their "hard" dorsal. As for the tail spotting, it should come out more once it hits the 12'' mark. IME.
 
It is very normal....they will fade out and become tottally black after they getting older

Here is mine...with spangling when juvenile (4,5") and without spangling (12")
Its.."peacock" spot on the tail also changes over time
