Do Not Believe Everything You Read About Flu Deaths

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A little off-topic, but over here, the Gov't has been saying one of the reasons for all these super viruses if you will is also in part due to the wrong use of antibiotics, helping viruses evolve into stronger strains resistant to a lot of meds currently available...

On a personal note though, i've never had flu shots, and most likely never will (unless absolutely necessary)

Antibiotics have no connection to viruses. Antibiotics produce resistant bacterial strains.

I don't understand about letting people build up immune system. The way vaccine works is that it exposes the immune system to a dead virus(or in some cases, lower number of live viruses) so the immune system get a a chance to make antibodies so it will be ready to fight the real thing later.

This particular argument is on the same line as let's only build levees when a flood is coming because we need to test our levee making skills...

I really don't see the relevance of that example to the immunity argument haha. I mean I do...but...come on lol.

In my honest opinion...allowing someone to be exposed to the influenza virus and getting through it normally vs. trying to acclimate your immune system to the virus via dead/dying viruses is going to have varying results

I havent had the flu in probably 15 years. I stopped getting flu shots at 10. I see no need for the immunizations unless you are already at risk due to another health issue.

I know people that get the flu shot every year and EVERY year get the flu anyhow...they somehow jusify it as not being "as bad" with the shot...that makes zero sense to me.

I think the real underlying problem here is people just don't take care of themselves and use immunizations and a crutch to slack off on proper diet, excercise and overall health...I watch what I eat and what vitamins I'm taking in and I never get sick.

(Karma will probably throat-punch me and give me 6 different types of influenza for this post)

I've never had a flu shot before. I don't know if I did as a kid. but I haven't had the flu in over ten years

I think only my oldest had one flu shot. the other kids never had one. they only ever get coughs or colds or fevers but that only lasts a couple of days

I haven't read thru the whole thread but i think the body should do what it needs to. Your immune system is only as strong as you allow it to become on its own. I never get flu shots stopped probably around 13 or so. I used to get very sick almost immediately after getting them so i stopped once i was allowed to decide. I honestly dont remember the last time i got anything other then a cough or fever.

I remember when my son was an infant alot of family was giving me flack about my fishtanks and that it wasnt healthy for him to be around. I wasnt going to give in that easy and decided to ask a doctor and they literally told me not to worry that the fishtank and other animals help build their immune when they are developing one and it makes their immune even faster

+1...let nature do its thing, we meddle far to much haha.

The original post spreads dangerous misinformation. The article is shoddily written, conveniently ignoring data from years after 2005, and /especially/ 2009 and onward.

2009 and onward brought influenza strains that prompt inflammation in lung tissue that makes it particularly deadly to groups previously thought to be a lower risk of complications. 20-35 year olds are spending weeks on ventilators -- at least 6 died in a two week period in Houston metro area during the 2013-2014 season. The 36,000 estimate is the average of deaths for the past 30 years. The past 10, it's been averaging closer to 32,000, so yeah, guess the estimates are /grossly/ innacurate. :p

Laypeople do not have the personal laboratory resources to tell the difference between influenza and other respiratory viruses. Adenovirus and respiratory syncytial virus both have much more severe and longer-lasting symptoms than the common cold, so those of you bragging about how the flu wasn't so bad should rethink that claim unless your doctor had your illness lab-confirmed. Similarly, 'stomach flu' is not influenza -- it's either food poisoning or a GI virus, like rotavirus or norovirus.

Antibiotics are for bacterial infections, which tend to be opportunistic infections. People frequently get ill with a virus, are weakened, /then/ the bacteria move in to take advantage. These secondary (like sinus or ear) infections are the reason why antibiotics are SOMETIMES prescribed.

I have had the flu. I also never it a flu shot. Vaccines are needed though. I don't get them ( well only the flu shot at least) because I never felt a great risk from not getting it. I probably should. As stated before, a vaccine introduces the virus to your body so it can create an antibody. This way we are building a stronger immune system.

A good case of needing vaccines is in dogs. Distemper is a horrible thing, and I'm sure it can be passed on to other dogs.
