DO NOT CLEAN YOUR FILTER MEDIA UNDER THE TAP !!!!!

I have done this for years, but since coming back into the hobby, the internet reveals all ! Tap water contains chlorine (UK) which kills all the useful bacteria - thus causing a restart of the nitrate cycle

Obvious when you know.... :WHOA:

save some water from a water change in a bucket and rinse it with that.

yes i had thre same problem use tank water

Always have a backup filter, preferably a sponge filter. I always have at least 2 and never rinse them both at the same time.... ;)

Water from water changes works great. You can also dechlor some tap water. If absolutely needed you can Quickly rinse the media in room temp. tap water without completely killing the colony but you will kill off part of it, the longer you rinse the more die.

I've just recently started using tank water to rinse out the sponges. however, before that I always either had multiple filters on one tank, multiple sponges in one filter or a bag of biomax (from aquaclear) that I would move around as I rinsed the tanks. the bio max was for smaller AC's (the former 200) and I would rinse one filter a week, moving the biomax accordingly.
