DO NOT CLEAN YOUR FILTER MEDIA UNDER THE TAP !!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
this is going to sound very stupid but......

When you do a water change in a tank, say....5 gallons of a 29, and you take out the 5 gallons, whats the best thing to put back into the tank? I;ve heard tapwater, dechlorinated tap water, someone even told me to just switch water from one tank to another (assuming you have multiple tanks....i never tried this one, didn't seem to make sense.) Whats the best to use?

personally, i just use de chlorinated tapwater that is at the same temp as the tank water (25C). I only have simple, hardy cichlids however. Have heard of folks aging water a day or two in advance of water changes and using that. straight tap water probably would not be a good idea.

I clean my filter media with windex, and rinse with battery acid.

You can rinse filter media in tapwater as long as its quick and not too hot or cold and then the media goes back into the water.

Agreed, the longer you use it the more bacteria are killed but it is not going to kill them all.
I replace the water removed in a change with dechlorinated tap water. Moving water from one tank to another just moves around potential pathogens and makes no sense.
