Do not use algae kill products if....!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I find all this to be rubbish. I've used algaefix by API for years in my barebottom tanks. I've never had any issues with the health of my fish. Sounds to me this is an issue of an under-filtered poorly maintenanced aquarium.

Thanks guys for the replies. Now i don't want to start a bashing frenzy ,seeing as i'm new to and like the site. However ,some things typed rubbed me the wrong way.Who likes being called lazy and unknowledgeable? My tank suffered an algea bloom so its poorly maintained. It seems some people can't go to bed happy if they don't get one bash a day.I can take criticism ,heck i even like it and think it's good if it's constructive, insults are not constructive.Next time you want to bash someone use constructive criticism and your posts will be appreciated alot more.Enough of that ,it's off my chest.

I bought my first aquarium at age 16 and i'm now 32 ,never had algae outbreak until now, does that sound like I maintain my tanks poorly:D.I do 1/3 WC every sat or sun , and keep water as pristine as i can.I'm not an expert and i'm not saying i do a better job than anyone else. Now i got this outbreak of algea.I did limit the light and food (poor bugers thought i was starving them) also did WCs,still lived.I thought algea kill was my last resort (ha papa roach) ,if i thought to do a search on this site for kill algea i would have known better.I never used algea killers before ,never had any to kill, so i didn't know it would kill fish, again if i did a search:screwy:.Didn't think off the search until after the fact.

Ok a few of you said algea killers, dead algae, and decaying matter can take the oxygen out of the water.I sucked up the dead algae and did 1/4 water changes as the algae died every other day.No dead algae on bottom and also did 1/3 WC last weekend.Am i safe with the oxygen level seeing that i removed the dead algae?Through away this crap the other day!!Thank you and good day to you all.

Point is your tank might have lacked oxygen already with no air source(pump) so when the algae remover did its job the dead substances might have starved your tank of its oxygen. But the chemical itself doesn't harm fish, there are some very reputable companies who make this product and have for years that would not risk there rep on a product killing there customers fish. I've done a search on the internet and funny thing is this thread is all i could find of anyone blaming an algaefix product for killing there fish. Like someone here mentioned the point of this product is for someone who wants to maintain an algae free aquarium that currently doesn't have any type of outbreak. Every bottle I have read clearly says to remove as much of the algae as possible from the glass and the filters and perform a waterchange before using this product if you already have an outbreak. Sorry to hear about your loss but the chemical wasn't responsible for the death of your fish.

algae problem?too much light.too much food.buy snails and your fish will most likely eat them.buy plecos and you'll never have algae.I have to feed my plecos algae wafers and zucchini b/c they eat all the algae b4 its even visible.

okay since you know what you are doing I can rule out too much food......its either too much light or lack of oxygen. Are your fish getting bigger?Bigger fish means more oxygen intake-may need a bubbler or did you move the tank by a window recently that gets alot of sunlight? Also, check your filters are not clogged up or need changing.

If you suffer from algea then the best product that i know of it eSHa Protalon-707. I know loads of friends that have used it and have never has a single casualty from it..
Also limiting the light won't really get rid of the algea once it's there, you need to starve it from light for it to have any real effect. That means putting a cover the tank for a few days and leave it there without moving it (no peaky peaky) untill 3-4 days have passed.
I like the others believe fully that the treatment wasn't to blame for the deaths though. Do you have and clown loaches in there? If so they would have died before the flowerhorns due to them being scaleless fish..

for the green water algal bloom. i found that micron filter pads work wonders... just pop them in ur filter and clear in a few days. i had one a few weeks ago, i cut light down to like 4 hours a day water changes 3 times a week and it really didnt do much. micron filter and 2 days and my water was crystal clear. then jus t remove or wash the micron filter

I agree with the OP. I had an algae bloom in a pond. Used that stuff WITH and airpump that made the pond look like a jacuzzi and, within 3 days every fish, goldfish and koi were dead with blood flowing out their gills and mouths. I never been so pissed off as some of these fish were 10+ years old. I didn't know who to kill, the guy at my LFS for recommending it, the company that provides a phone number only to a voicemail or, myself. As with the other posters I've learned my lesson and will only use natural process' to rid algae. But, a whole pond? I was truly shocked.

I agree there is no need to bash. For whatever reason something in this tank went awry and he is trying to correct it. Things happen and there is no need to treat someone poorly because of it. It just makes people not want to ask for help.

If keeping fish was the easiest thing in the world to do then we wouldn't need this site.
