do paired up fish reach thier potential?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Beside the competition in nature, many cichlids spawn with the seasons, could be a matter of temp, could be a change in water chemistry brought on by spring rain, or dry season.
In our aquariums we often maintain constant warmth and chemistry which allows for constant spawning.
My beani spawned last year at a very small size, maybe 4"M 2+" female,

but over the winter I've allowed the temp to drop into the mid 60s, so spawning stopped.
She is now close to 6" and he has grown considerably.

I believe spawning will now begin again with warming temps, and I will add rain water to my water changes.

wow so they died in 3 years?

May be 3.5 to 4 year since I got them at 6 month to a year old. I did large water change twice a month and they typically spawned right after the water change which resembles the arrival of the rainy season. The toll on them was tremendous as if their biological clock was condensed to 3 years.
