Do plamts give oxygen in the water?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hello; Yes they do during the time that the lights are on. It is my understanding that, like all living things, they consume some oxygen during cellular respiration. I believe this means they will remove a bit of oxygen during the time the lights are off.
Depending on the type of lights and the intensity you will likely want to determine a suitable photoperiod. I have had decent results with lights on for 14 to 16 hours and off for 8 to 10 hours.
I like the look of lights in the 6500k range and they do well with plants. They are sometimes called daylight bulbs.
good luck

Idk. My roommate designs the tank. I just deal with the filters and other stuff. He said he got the rocks 99c per pound. I'll post a better pic later. His iPad camera sucks. The lights are on from 9am til 9pm sometimes more. I have a ton of marbled con fry growing out there, 12 cories, 10 rummynose tetras, 10 blood fin tetras.

Hello; Looked at the new pictures. The long narrow leaved plants in the center may be giant saggatirius (sp?). If so, I have had thes develop leaves several feet long. I believe they can take strong light.
The large plants on the left with the sort of arrowhead shape may be a sword, perhaps a brazillian (sp?). I have not kept them but have kept many amazon swords. If they are amazons they will need some sort of root feeding as some point. Plant tabs work fairly well and are easy. I tried a new tactic a while back. I soaked some potting soil untill saturated and then put some in old 35mm film containers. I froze the containers. I had some trouble getting the frozen soil chunks out of the containers and they shed a fair amount of soil before i could bury them near my amazon roots. It did work and my amazons are showing some nice growth.

can I just buy the plant tabs? Does petco have them? can I use he plant tabs for all my plants? Do they make the water dirty? Do they affect the water params in any way?
