I got a new tank for my daughter and want to know if they need To be added to a cycled tank or I can add them with a brand new un-cycled tank.

He is about 2-3" on Dia n rarely Basks... Maybe once a week but he has the option to do so :)

Thanks as I know a lil about Turtles :)

Turtle waste will originate as ammonia just like fish waste... and in a
cycled' tank will convert to nitrite then nitrate just like fish waste...

Turtles are more tolerant of low ammonia/nitirte levels than fish, but they still "suffer" from them...

So your turtle will be "better off" being put into a cycled tank, but is less likely to die from amonia poisoning than most fish would... I would at least "seed" the turtle tank with bacteria from an established fish tank.

They will do fine in a uncycled tank but its better to throw some media from a cycled tank in their. almost all turtles are pretty hardy about bad water quality it wont kill them instantly like fish but it will shorten their life.

One other thing I would recommend is to run carbon in what ever filter you decide to use for the turtle tank. Turtle waste can sure stink up a tank faster than almost anything else.

While I agree turltes are far less likely to die from ammonia/nitrite poisoning than fish... It's still harmful to them.

Shell rot that occures from ammonia poisoning will greatly lower the quality of life of a turtle. And I think most of us put a fairly high value on quality of life for our animals.

I don't mean to suggest that you (or anyone) doesn't value quality of life of your animals, I just think you overlooked a detail of how it would be impacted ;)

Thanks everyone.
I will put in 2 cycled sponge filters and a canister that has been running in a cycled tank for 2 days (I did add 1 chamber with cycled ceramic rings)
I'll let that run for a day then add the turtle

Thanks everyone :)

^^ Soudns good... Just like anytime we mes with a fish tank, I suggest you check for ammonia a day or two after getting everything going and if you see any just water change as needed to keep it in check until the bacteria catches up...

Musk Turtles are in general tough as nails so starting off with a cycled tank is not necessary but it couldn't hurt.

If you clean 100% of the water every day like I do here in hatchling tanks you dont need any cycling.
